How to add a favicon to your website

One file and one line of HTML get a favicon into every browser. Here is how, plus the extras for phones.

Updated October 2026

You need a square image of your logo or symbol, ideally a PNG with a transparent background.

The whole process takes about five minutes.

If you use WordPress, skip to the WordPress section.

1. Create favicon.ico

Upload your PNG to the PNG to ICO converter and download the ICO file.

Rename the file to favicon.ico. The converted file already contains 16, 32 and 48 px, the sizes browsers and Google use.

2. Upload it to your site root

Put favicon.ico in the top folder of your website, next to your home page. It should open at https://yourdomain.com/favicon.ico.

On cPanel hosting this is usually public_html. Use the File Manager or FTP.

3. Add the link tag

Add this line inside the <head> of every page, or in your shared header template:

<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">

Browsers also look for /favicon.ico on their own, but the tag makes it explicit. Google Search needs the tag on your home page.

4. Add icons for phones

iPhones and iPads use a separate 180×180 PNG when someone adds your site to their home screen. Android uses icons listed in a web manifest.

<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">
<link rel="manifest" href="/site.webmanifest">

The full list of sizes and a ready manifest file are in the favicon sizes guide.

5. Check that it works

Open yourdomain.com/favicon.ico directly. If you see the icon, the file is in place.

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. If you still see the old icon, open the site in a private window or clear the browser cache.

Google Search updates favicons on its own schedule, which can take days or weeks. You can request indexing of your home page in Search Console to speed it up.

Adding a favicon in WordPress

WordPress calls the favicon a Site Icon and creates all sizes for you. Upload a square PNG of at least 512×512 px.

  1. In older and classic themes, go to Appearance → Customize → Site Identity.
  2. In newer versions and block themes, go to Settings → General and find Site Icon.
  3. Choose your PNG, crop if asked, and save.

If your theme or an SEO plugin adds its own favicon tags, use only one method so the tags don't conflict.

Common problems

  • Icon is blurry: start from a PNG of at least 256×256 px, and simplify the design for 16 px.
  • Icon has a white box: your PNG has a white background. Remove it in an editor and convert again.
  • Old icon keeps showing: it's the browser cache. Try a private window first.
  • Google shows a generic globe: check that robots.txt doesn't block the icon file and that the tag is on your home page.
